Edit: 2020-11-01 I found that the max in Z was about 194mm with this modification, but I will soon redraw the motor bracket so it’s possible to get at least 200mm.
Results:
I begin with before and after pictures so you get to decide for yourself if it’s worth continue reading.
To the left of the picture is a test cube printed with the original screw for the z-axis and to the right the same cube printed with the same filament roll but with a ball screw mounted on the z-axis (Link to the screw I used is further down the page).
In this picture are the same cubes as above, but I have cut them apart to get a picture in cross section.
The cubes are printed with 0.2 mm layer height.
Parts for upgrade:
Here is a link to the details that need to be printed.

Holder for the bearing I have drawn in 4 different dimensions, I used 22.1mm which gave a good fit to the bearing for me, but it depends a bit on the precision in the printer, how much the plastic shrinks and so on.
My settings.
- PLA eller PETG
- 0,2mm layer height
- 30% infill
- no support4
Other material needed:
- 12x M4 t-nuts: https://amzn.to/36IrNyQ
- 2x M4 washer
- 16x M4 washer
- 2x M3 washer
- 6x M4x16
- 4x M4x10
- 2x M4x10 (Round head screw)
- 2x M4x14
- 2x M3x14
- 1x vibration damper (optionally): https://amzn.to/37Vie0r
- 1x Ball screw: https://amzn.to/37GwolE
- 1x Ball bearing 6900: https://amzn.to/3mAYJhN
I use Vibration dampers for the stepper motor, which is optional, so I only need 2 M3x14 and 2 washers. To be completely honest, I only had M3x16 at home so it had to be like that with a couple of extra washers (but M3x14 would have been nicer) ;).
The 2 screws with rounded head are located on the top of the ball nut bracket, they are a little bit lower than a regular Allen screw, which makes the belt for x-axis go freely (but it is certainly possible to use another type of screw with low head).
Is there something you want me to change, clarify or if you are just wondering about something, write a comment and I will do what I can to help.
It seems to me it is excellent idea. Completely with you I will agree.
