Garage Door Hardware – Tips for Installation
Assembling an automatic garage door can be a challenging project for even an experienced mechanic. The sheer number of components that go into the total unit can leave you somewhat confused as to where to begin. However; with a little faith, confidence and commitment even you can assemble your own garage door if you have the basic tools that are necessary for the job.
Study the Instruction manual
To begin with, it helps if you have purchased your garage door from one of the garage door hardware companies that manufactures user friendly door kits that come with precise and easy to follow instructions. If this is the case, then the first order is to go through the instruction manual in its entirety, to gain some comprehension of what it contains.
Study the Garage Door Hardware in the Kit
Familiarize yourself with all of the separate pieces of garage door hardware that are in the kit before you begin. By doing so, your job will be much more easier to complete. Learning the names of each component as you go will only make your job harder.
Be Careful With the Old Spring
Be very careful when removing the spring mechanism on the old door if there is one on it. Don’t attempt to remove it while it is in the extended or “stretched out position. Garage door springs are designed to carry a lot of tension and unscrewing one that is stretched out can result in missing front teeth when it finally comes loose.
Check the Opening for Plumb
After you have removed to pre-existing garage door, check all of the edges of the garage door opening for rot or loose attachment. Also, check the sides of the garage door with a level to see that they are plumb. If they are out of plumb at all, small wooden shims can be used to drive out the areas the need to be, to render the sides of the garage door opening plumb.
