www.greenpowerscience.com This is a video demonstrating the 24″ paraboloid which is roughly a 75% mirror vs. a spherical shape with a 95% mirror lining.

I took the 8 inch reflector off an old million watt search light and it made a useful firestarter. Dried broomstraw literally exploded with a pop before igniting into a useful fire.

can i get this metal aluminum sheeting at home depot or lowes? how much? and a 12 inch dish preferably? all used hopefully & i’m interested in adding an enclosed thermocouple at the focal point to make some electricity.

You also forget the effects of entropy in that of rocks water and soil. – they hold the heat in the capacitor that is the earth. I’m only focusing 32 sq feet on direct angles in the cold – while the sun is closer.

  • seancap08 says:

…by aiming the dish though a more clear atmosphere while the sun is closer you negate the claim of “higher in the sky” regardless of the tilt of the earth, the energy at the focal point of the dish is what matters. Energy is focused through a straight line, from a straight line, to a focal point – regardless of ambient temperature. The horizontal captured area is only that of the dish… and its inclinication is designated by that of the season. – you are wrong!!

  • seancap08 says:

then why are concentrated temperatures just as easy to obtain? by your logic they should be more difficult but this is not the case. 900 and 1000+ degrees are a simple matter in winter with ambient temps 30F and below on sunny days.

this song is good to light up some joints on thouse mirrors :)

what song is that? title please

  • enicao says:

that’s wrong, the difference in heat between summer and winter is due to the change in the inclination of the rotation axis of the earth.

in summer the sun is higher is the sky, so there is more energy per horizontal area, and the sun light as a shorter distance to go through the atmosphere.

in winter the sun is lower, so there is less energy per horizontal area, and the sun light as a longer distance to go through the atmosphere

same as midday sun is brighter than just before sunset

  • seancap08 says:

It does work in winter time. In fact it work rather well because the sun is closer to the earth than in summer, and on clear days the skies have less humidity in them.

  • YourMom4free says:

Do know if this would work in the winter time?

Potato cut into wedges, dipped into spices, and thrown in a deep fryer!

Yummy with ketchup and salt in a paper bag from the local Quickie-Mart!

Just don’t release those monsters into nature, this can easily cause fires world wide.

Nice job with the 23″ spherical reflector. I assume that is the one you molded in fiberglass from the bottom of a water tank?

Did you know you can get page magnifier Fresnel lenses at Walmart? I found them next to the optometrist area for about $12 and the lens measures about 6.25″x9.5″ which is equivalent to about 40 watts of sunlight. Much smaller than what you use in your videos, but great for lighting fireworks, making fire and such. It is the point focus type rather than linear.

Ok GreenScience, you guys are pushing it…I just realized I just watched a movie with no words and no actors and loved every minute!

The cool soundtrack did it…plus it’s really fun to see wood burn from power collected from the sun.

Sure you can do that to your taters but doing it solar is great becasue you get home and you don’t ahve to wait lil sour cream some cheese chives gravy from a roast and you are dining within your arriving home of 5 min.

You know potaters them things we turn in to french fries taters. Like if you eatin some alligator and french fries you are having gators and taters.

  • roidroid says:

    what’s taters aye?

  • roidroid says:

your big dish has a rather slight curve but it’s still surpruising how close it’s focal length is.

it seems that if you want to focus onto something a few meters away, one only needs an ever-so-slight curve. Perhaps just a normal flat panel of something – with a slight vacuum behind it will provide enough curvature.

I wonder if a large flat GLASS mirror will be able to be tensioned like hat and not break. Perhaps it is possible.

  • BILLNYYE says:

Where can I get an aluminum bowl?

  • BILLNYYE says:

Do you like spherical shapes or true paraboloids for solar use.

  • sciencefun127 says:

    to make the aluminum dish.
