More than likely the dish has a metalized surface. Dipping it in a strong lye solution will cause the aluminum to react and release anything its holding. To preserve the surface of the aluminum you can use a laquer for short term, or anodize the surface as longterm.

The either bake on the paint and/or electric charge. Same thing they do with cars, ask a auto body shop. Or find out who makes the dish for them and call the MFG, they would know.

* I have used this several times to polish Aluminum car parts such as valve covers, heads, blocks, transmissions etc.
The oven cleaner also works well for stripping Anodized coatings on aluminum. This was discovered when I was trying to strip the black coating off of an R/C 10T frame which I later polished.
Once done with the polish I would suggest using Mothers Mag aluminum wheel polish and sealer to help cut down on the oxidization that will occur on the raw aluminum surface.
Use Aircraft Stripper to remove the paint then go over it a second time with any oven cleaner that specifically says “Do not use on Aluminum” do not let this sit on the surface long, only a few min, it will de-glaze the aluminum and make it much easier to polish.

You can buy a kit from Walters abrasives for $100.00 that fits grinders /buffer that will bring that up to 98% in about fifteen minutes.
Check with your local Welding Distributor.

Do you or do you know where I can get free plans to build homemade solar heat & electric..I Find I’m always missing a few details from the videos and plans to follow so i don’t waste money would make the whole thing so much easier. Heat is a bad idea. Aluminum is extremely thermally conductive & has a low elastic limit. You will probably permanently deform the dish long before the finish comes off.

I’ve been hunting some forums, and the most cost-effective and widely suggested solution I’ve found is aircraft stripper, available at an auto parts store. I can’t vouch for it’s effectiveness, as I haven’t tried it, but it’s probably cheap enough to experiment with. If that doesn’t work, peruse automotive forum for methods of removing powder from Al rims (where I found this). They discussion typically avoid abrading & heating, and lean towards chemical treatments.
would using a heat gun work? (its hot enough to melt paint of walls)
I’m not sure why you would bother with the dtv dish and all the work it takes to strip and shine it when for under $100 you can get a 4′x4′ sheet of mirrored plexiglass and shape it . all that takes is heat a round frame and then pull a vacuum under it. now that I think of it you might be able to pour boiling water over the plexi and a big trash barrow to form a parabolic shape
no not as a stripper but for polishing they cant be beat
what a ferral lens in the sun light do with this dish? a solar powered genarator, solar dehydrator, cooker, the posabilitys are many. peace mik
in my painting experience we used pure acitone to get the paint off. it just wrinkles up. some times it is just not good enough though. then you go to airplain paint stripper. definitly use chemical resistant gloves on both, and good ventilation or respirator, plus I would suggest using good eye protection as well.

I think you got the best method with the mirror film.. I know of a local shop that can do it with glass surfaces, so if their are glass parabolic shapes, these guys can do this perfectly, without the lines an scratches.. But honestly, like you said, it does not make much difference, the mirror film is about 90% true mirrror.. I am wondering if you can find some bronze film and see the effects with that.
